Peer leaders in Center Moriches Middle School’s Sources of Strength program recently ran a campaign to re-introduce themselves to the school community. Student representatives put up posters around the school building, visited and spoke to classes, decorated the building’s entrance walkway, and recorded for the middle school morning show, all in order to remind their classmates that they are always there to help with the tough times that may arise.

Sources of Strength is an organization focused on promoting mental health awareness as well as suicide, violence, bullying, and substance abuse prevention.  Members of the organization include the club’s advisors Assistant Principal Adango Longjohn, staff members Tayor Brown, Kathleen Cibuls, Erik Haughn, Teresa Horoszewski, Taryn Kirk-Glynn, Jessica Khordos, Kathleen McCormick, Michael Russo, Rachel Tomei, and Christopher Winslow along with a select group of student peer leaders.  Center Moriches Middle School students were given a list of the adults and students comprising the Sources of Strength group so that they would know who to reach out to if the need should arise.

“The Sources of Strength program builds a positive school culture and promotes mental wellness utilizing a peer-led, strengths-based approach,” said Principal Dr. Melissa Reggio. “This supports our Center Moriches Middle School community by promoting positive connections, building resilience, and encouraging healthy behaviors. Student leaders are trained to raise awareness about normalizing help-seeking and to create a supportive environment. By fostering a culture of strength and support, we are helping to prevent crises and strengthen overall well-being in the school. We look forward to the positive impact these students will have on our community!”
