Clayton Huey students Declan Beemer and Kayla Moodt earned the honor through their excellence in physical education and academics, while displaying strong leadership skills.

Overseen by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, Suffolk Zone’s mission is to ensure students have the highest quality health and physical education programs possible. The Suffolk Zone recognizes two fifth graders from each elementary school in Suffolk County for their outstanding performance in the physical education program. The recipients are selected based on five standards; competency in motor skills and movement patterns, the knowledge of concepts, principles, and strategies related to movement and performance, the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness, personal and social behavior that respects themselves and others, recognition of the value of physical activity for overall wellness, enjoyment, challenge, and/or self-expression.

Beemer and Moodt were nominated for the award by Clayton Huey physical education teacher Kimberly Plush for best representing these standards in their class. They will be presented with certificates at an event in Bay Shore this spring.

“Physical education is a crucial pillar in both the physical and emotional well-being of our students, during their time in Center Moriches schools and beyond,” said Clayton Huey Elementary School Principal Dennis Ricci. “Declan and Kayla earned this recognition for demonstrating that they consistently demonstrate teamwork, perseverance, and respect. Their dedication to fitness and leadership sets a great example for their peers, and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.”
