Fifth graders from Clayton Huey Elementary School, part of the Center Moriches Union Free School District, recently presented their annual Primary Years Programme (PYP) exhibition. At the exhibition, students demonstrated what they learned during their time at Clayton Huey regarding the year’s central idea: People’s actions have an effect on their world.
As a culminating experience in PYP in the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, students conducted in-depth research on a topic of interest and designed an action project aimed at making a difference. Throughout the process, they exemplified the PYP learner profile traits and applied key transdisciplinary skills. The projects reflected their growth and readiness to transition into the IB Middle Years Programme at the middle school level.Students welcomed family and community members to the PYP Exhibition to showcase their research and problem-solving work. Project topics included how we can stop plastic from further reaching the Mariana Trench, how to reduce the cost and water consumption required to create hardware while improving both hardware and software, and exploring the science behind soccer to determine whether it can be used to improve performance.
“Here in the Center Moriches School District, we pride ourselves on being a full International Baccalaureate district, from elementary through high school,” said Center Moriches Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ricardo Soto. “This group of fifth graders showed through their research that the IB program is preparing them to take on the world’s challenges and help make it a better place.”
