Center Moriches High School students broke a sweat ahead of Thanksgiving during the schoolwide Turkey Trot! The Sayville Running Company partnered with the school to host the 5K race on Nov. 21. Students ran laps around the building as their peers and teachers cheered them on.

Leading up to the Turkey Trot, the high school held a food drive where grade levels competed to collect the most items. The food was donated to HELP Suffolk.

The Center Moriches School District held its annual Walk of Heroes Celebration on Nov. 9 to honor those who have served in the U.S. military. Beginning at Center Moriches High School, local veterans walked through the hallways lined by students waving American flags. Students who have family members who are veterans joined their heroes as they paraded through the building. The Walk of Heroes then continued through the Middle School and onto Clayton Huey Elementary School.

Students expressed their gratitude for the sacrifices veterans made and for their service to the United States. Additionally, they learned about Veterans Day through in-class activities and lessons.

Center Moriches High School students recently collaborated on a project with fourth and fifth graders to support mental health awareness. High school students in Ian Leary’s diversity, equality and inclusion advocacy class visited Clayton Huey Elementary School for the interactive project. This class aims to work within the school and community to increase student engagement.

The high schoolers first read the book, “Sad Monster, Glad Monster” to the elementary school students. Throughout the book, monsters explain what makes them feel different emotions and how they are encouraged to talk about their feelings. Following the read aloud, high school students worked with the fourth and fifth graders to create their own popsicle stick monsters to help them express their emotions.

The activity brought together the Center Moriches school community while creating a resource students can use to support social emotional learning.

Darren Sardelli, a published author and poet, visited Center Moriches Middle School and High School to share the power of words with students. Sardelli shared the unlikely story of how he became a writer and eventually a professional poet. He encouraged students to take chances and to not get discouraged if things don’t initially work in their favor.

Sardelli read some of his published poems aloud to students. He took them through his writing process and shared tips including create your own characters and be playful with words. At the end of his presentation, Sardelli took photos with students and signed autographs.

Eight students from Center Moriches High School were selected to perform in the NYSCAME All-County Festival later this fall. They will perform among the best music students from Suffolk at a concert held at Northport High School on Nov. 17. They were selected based on their NYSSMA ratings and teacher recommendations.

Congratulations to the following students: Stephen Buff, Alexandra DeMatteo, Nicholas Gentile, Alexandria Gilroy, Jordan Jastrzebski, Victoria Pendzick, Tori Rudnick and Mackenzie Sweeney.
