Second Grade Designs Brought to Life in Monster Match

Two pictures of students sitting and smiling at the camera thumbnail244127

Sixth graders in the Center Moriches School District are bringing the designs of second graders to life. Ahead of the annual Monster Match, second graders at Clayton Huey Elementary School created and colored their own imaginary monsters. Their designs were sent to sixth grade family and consumer science classes at Center Moriches Middle School. The sixth graders then took the artwork and sewed custom stuffed animals for their younger peers.

The sixth graders brought the creations back to Clayton Huey for a Monster Match reveal. In addition to giving the second graders their handmade stuffed animals, the middle school students created a story about the monsters to read. The second graders were excited to see their designs in real life and connect with older students in the district.

Sixth graders at Center Moriches Middle School traveled back in time to ancient Greece. On March 6, the building’s Greek Festival brought together all aspects of ancient Greek culture while connecting to the social studies curriculum.

Ahead of the festival, sixth grade family and consumer science classes collaborated with librarian Ms. Bredes to create ancient Greek-style clothing. Students used newspapers and recycled materials in the makerspace to bring their designs to life. The clothing was displayed in a fashion station at the Greek Festival.

During the festival, students participated in a number of stations that connected many different disciplines. They participated in a living museum, several games and even enjoyed a Greek meal for lunch. The annual event helps students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom while bringing together the sixth grade class.

Read Across America Day

Two stories of people celebrating Read Across America Day thumbnail242959

Students across the Center Moriches School District joined a nationwide celebration of reading and literature on March 2. The day, which marks Dr. Seuss’ birthday, is also known as Read Across America Day. Schools, libraries and families are encouraged to come together to foster a love for reading.

Center Moriches Middle School held its annual read aloud, a culmination of the Read Around the School program. Beginning in January, students are given incentives including raffles and gift cards, to read a number of books. Come March 2, they gather in the building’s library to share a portion of one of their favorite books aloud.

Clayton Huey Elementary School welcomed a special visitor – the Cat in the Hat! Principal Dennis Ricci dressed up as the famous character to visit classrooms and get students excited about reading. Elementary students participated in several in-class activities focused on Dr. Suess and his many books.
