National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society was formed in 1929 to create an organization that recognizes and encourages academic achievement while developing character, service, citizenship, and leadership. Nearly 91 years later, the NJHS has gained a reputation for excellence. At the Center Moriches Middle School, we want to continue that tradition.

In order to be considered for membership in the National Junior Honor Society, the student must meet the following criteria: scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service, and character. All criteria weigh EQUALLY and grades alone DO NOT guarantee selection into the honor society.

Scholarship: Maintain an 90% average (core classes only). 6th Grade GPA (Quarters 3 and 4) as well as 7th Grade GPA (Quarters 1, 2 and 3) are all considered in this average. Conscientiously attend to all academic responsibilities.

***For the incoming 6th graders 2020-2021 school year, no grade below an 80 is allowed in any of the core classes during any given quarter. Please see the 6th grade and 7th grade letters attached below for specific information:

Leadership: Uphold and promote positive behaviors, takes initiative, and handles responsibilities efficiently. Suggested leadership activities include but are not limited to: Club officer Team captain Team manager Student-teacher (religion, dance, martial arts) Camp counselor Leader in the classroom Tutoring younger students Girl Scouts / Boy Scouts Section leader in band

Citizenship: Community involvement, respect for freedom, justice, and the rights of others. Service: Participation in school and outside activities. Suggested activities include but are not limited to: Food drive UNICEF Walk-a-thons Essay contests Library volunteer Relay for Life/Ride for Life

Character: Honesty, respect for peers and adults, following all school rules, cooperative, and takes criticism well.

Failure to uphold any of the above criteria(s) will result in the student being placed on probation. Multiple violations of the criteria(s) above will result in a meeting of the Faculty Council to review continued membership.
